Article: Separated by continents during pandemic

A couple were caught by surprise when the coronavirus pandemic struck in early March of 2020. Theresa was visiting her mother in the United States while Bill stayed behind at work in Bulgaria. Soon he ran out of money to buy food or pay bills. Theresa’s residency visa in Bulgaria expired, and her mother ended up having cancer. Airports and borders were closed.

The separation turned into a nearly five-month ordeal. I interviewed the couple and helped them tell their story.
